報告內容摘要: Advanced structural analysis methods that account for manufacturing defects in composite parts are needed to enable accurate assessment of their capability and useful life and enhance current design and maintenance practices.  The defects must be accurately measured and the measurements must be converted into structural models to assess the effects of the defects on strength/fatigue behavior. In particular, wrinkles and porosity/voids are typical defects in carbon/epoxy and glass/epoxy composite aircraft flight-critical components. Such defects impact the performance and the service life of these components.

The main objective of this work is to summarize recent results in advanced structural methods that could account for manufacturing defects in composites enable accurate assessment of their capability and useful life.  The first technical challenge is the ability to measure the defects in three dimensions and the automated interpretation of the nondestructive measurement of defects required for accurate structural diagnostics.  It is worth noting that rudimentary tools such as a ruler or a caliper could result in unacceptable measurement variation and affect the objectivity at making disposition decision of the affected part.  The second technical challenge is the development of advanced structural methods able to utilize the results of NDE in a comprehensive failure prognosis that captures multi-stage failure modes in composite structure and predicts initiation and progression of structural damage.

報告人簡介:Dr. Andrew Makeev started his tenure at UTA in the rank of associate professor of aerospace engineering in 2011 and promoted to full professor in 2013. Prior to joining UTA Dr. Makeev was an assistant professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), and a principal engineer for Risk Analysis at Delta Air Lines. Dr. Makeev is an expert in composite and metallic materials, structural methods, prognostics and reliability. He has published more than 20 peer-reviewed research papers in last three years, in various journals and conferences proceedings. He received awards from AIAA, Sigma XI Scientific Research Society, Georgia Tech, and Delta Air Lines; and most recently, the best paper award at the 36th European Rotorcraft Forum, held in Paris, France, in 2010. Dr. Makeev serves on the American Helicopter Society Structures Committee; the American Helicopter Society Manufacturing Committee; and the American Society for Testing and Materials E08 Fatigue and Fracture Committee, E08.04.04 Variability, Statistics, and Probabilistic Modeling Task Group. His current research projects are funded by Vertical Lift Consortium (VLC) and Office of Naval Research (ONR). He has obtained around US $6.0 million research grants since 2011 as a PI.
